Varkala — India's Most Vibrant Surf Town

Varkala is an unexpectedly enchanting destination that captures visitors with its blend of adventure and culture. I attended the Varkala International Surfing Festival 2025 and found the town delivered far more than competitive waves.

The festival

Held April 10–13 at Edava Beach, organised by Kerala Tourism and the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society. Dozens of surfers danced on the waves — turning, carving, balancing as if the ocean was their playground.

Surfing conditions

Varkala's waves are slightly rougher and more powerful than Mulki or Goa — an ideal training environment once you're past true-beginner. Steeper learning curve, accelerated progress. Most schools operate near Kapil Beach.

Other adventures

  • Scuba diving — visibility varies with tides.
  • Kayaking — Paravur Lake at sunrise or sunset.
  • Paragliding — Varkala Cliff, spectacular aerial views of the Arabian Sea.

Culture

The Shri Janardhana Swami Temple Festival coincided with my visit — 10 days of Kalari martial arts performances and processions with elephants and costumed dancers. The temple itself provides profound stillness.

Food

Cliff-top cafes dominate. Veg: Satvik, Hotel Suprabhatham, Hotel Aryas. Non-veg: Bindu's Café, InDa Café, Café del Mar.

When to visit

October–March for surfing and outdoor pursuits. April–May for cultural festivals.
