How to Become a Certified Scuba Diver in India (Step-by-Step Guide)
What does "certified scuba diver" mean?
Tourist divers experience discovery dives where a divemaster holds them the entire time. Certified divers are independent — dive with a buddy, control their equipment, manage buoyancy, explore freely (always buddy system).
Step-by-step
1. Choose a certification agency
- PADI — largest, broadest global recognition, slightly pricier.
- SSI — also internationally recognised, more affordable.
~90% of training content is the same. Both enable worldwide diving; PADI edges in brand recognition.
2. Choose a location in India
Andaman & Nicobar · Lakshadweep · Netrani Island (Karnataka) · Goa. Islands offer better visibility and calmer conditions than mainland.
3. Complete theory
Dive physics, equipment, safety procedures, pressure theory. Typically online.
4. Confined water training
Regulator recovery, mask clearing, buoyancy, emergencies, equipment assembly — in a pool or shallow water.
5. Open water dives
Four open-water dives across two days to demonstrate mastery.
Certification levels
- Open Water Diver — 18 m
- Advanced Open Water Diver — 30 m
- Deep Diver Specialty — 40 m
Timeline & cost
3–4 days for Open Water. ₹30,000–₹35,000 typically, more at island locations.
Requirements
- Swim 200 m without stopping
- Tread water for 10 minutes
- Certified instructors, 1:1–1:2 ratio ideally, maintained equipment, approved dive sites
Common mistakes
- Picking on lowest price alone.
- Ignoring verified reviews.
- Accepting large groups (ideal 1 instructor : 1–2 students).
- Choosing low-visibility locations when alternatives exist.
After certification
Digital license valid worldwide. Next steps: night diving, deep diving, wreck diving specialities.
