India is an excellent place for beginners — warm water, diverse waves, affordable lessons, fast-growing surf culture.
Why India is ideal
Warm ocean temperatures eliminate heavy wetsuits. Lessons are reasonably priced. Diverse wave conditions across the coastline.
Wave types
- Beach breaks (over sand) — recommended for beginners. Shallow and forgiving. Mulki, Varkala, parts of Goa, Pondicherry, Vizag.
- Point breaks (over rocks/reefs) — longer rides, but advanced only.
How lessons work
First class: 15–20 min theory on conditions, board anatomy, technique. Instructors push students into waves — most beginners stand up within 4–5 waves. Soft-top boards sized to your height and weight.
Guidance for beginners
- Small bruises and falls are normal.
- Wear a rash guard, swimwear, sunscreen.
- Fitness isn't required; water comfort is.
- Balance > strength.
- Body type is irrelevant.
Common mistakes
- Excessive fear in beginner zones.
- Looking down while riding.
- Multiple surfers going for the same wave.
- Improper board handling when walking.
Etiquette
Don't drop in on others' waves. Respect instructors and fellow surfers. Awareness prevents injuries.
Conclusion
Keep expectations realistic. Don't over-prepare. Trust the process.
